Exploring the Catalan capital ...

I've been meaning to visit Barcelona for a long time and like many places, didn't make it - until this summer when I decided to do something about it. So on a Tuesday in August, I headed to Heathrow early in the morning and before you know it, I was walking down the Ramblas in the Catalan capital.

Barcelona is a great place to visit since it has the best of everything - the history, the old areas like the Barri Gotìc, La Ribera and El Rival to the fifteenth century cathedral of La Seu. This area is a great place to stroll around through the narrow streets visiting tapas bars, restaurants, shops and just chilling out. Then you move north of the Plaça de Catalunya to the newer Eixample area much of which is dominated by Antoni Gaudí's architecture - from La Pedrera to Casa Battlò to the magnificent La Segrada Família church under construction to the wonderfully wacky Parc Güell in the Gracìa area.

Head up onto Montjuïc for a very different view - the Castle leads down to the 1992 Olympic stadia leading down to the Palau Nacional. On the Thursday night, thousands of people watched the Font Magica spring into life to the musical accompaniment.

And finally, no trip to Barcelona would be complete without a trip out the FC Barcelona's 98,000 seater stadium at Camp Nou ... great!

Come along for a trip around BCN ... it’s now right up there with Sydney and Amsterdam as one of my absolute favourite cities.
